4 Famous Insta-Worthy Hollywood History Spots To Visit In Los Angeles
1. Removal of the “Land”
The most famed site in Hollywood can be seen for miles: the white-lettered Hollywood sign.
Originally built in 1923 to advertise real estate developers Woodruff’s and Shoults’ housing development as HOLLYWOODLAND, the last four letters were taken down in 1949 so the sign could refer to the district.
There’s no way to walk directly up to the sign, but it can be seen for most of the time you drive through the area. You can also take a short, mostly flat walk on the 3.5-mile loop around the Hollywood Reservoir or head to the Griffith Observatory parking lot, where there is also a James Dean bust.

The Chateau Marmont has historically been a place where celebrities stay, for both long and short-term bouts. It comprises 63 rooms, suites, cottages, and bungalows and has been around since 1929.
The Marmont has touched big names in all industries. Anthony Bourdain, Tim Burton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Annie Leibovitz, and Quentin Tarantino have done work with the hotel as a backdrop.
The hotel appears in Academy Award-winning films La La Land and A Star Is Born; actor James Franco created a replica of one of the bungalows for his Rebel Without a Cause exhibit at MOCA; and comedian and actor John Belushi famously died there of a drug overdose in 1982.
